The Perfect Couple

Wow, these people got 99 problems. This was such a fun ride. Benji and Celeste’s wedding is the social event of the summer in Nantucket and becomes even more so when the maid of honor turns up dead the morning of the wedding. Before I get into spoiler territory, I want to talk about the central theme of the story which is that there’s no such thing as a perfect couple/ relationship and to continue to search for that will inevitably disappoint you. Each couple in the story was comparing themselves to another seemingly “perfect” couple and therefore discontented. Don’t get me wrong, each of these couples had terrible issues particularly the Winburys, but they had unrealistic views of love from the get go.

Now to spoiler territory.

Celeste “falling” for Shooter with her parents seemingly perfect relationship in mind, was my least favorite part of the book. I think it was an interesting commentary on looking for what you need in a relationship instead of trying to have a carbon copy of the appearance of someone else’s. Celeste’s infatuation with Shooter (first off, his name is Shooter) was a very immature view of love. They spent one day together and he gave her blanket fuckboy compliments and she swooned. Not to mention he was a professional partier and was hitting on his best friends fiancé. The guy was covered in red flags. Benji was a nice, safe and grounded guy and just wasn’t as interesting as Shooter. Which honestly sounded like an 18 year old’s view of wanting something exciting. Not saying Celeste should’ve married Benji if she really didn’t love him. But, he seems like he was someone who she could have appreciated when she was older. You can see from a mile away how she and Shooter’s relationship would’ve gone.

Tag is truly the worst. I was shocked that Greer decided to have his back in the end. Thomas too?! Good lord. The only good guy was Benji and he wound up with nothing.

The ending was pretty lame in my opinion, but I enjoyed the ride so much that it’s still worth it. Can’t wait to see the show!
