My Lady Jane

My Lady Jane is my favorite new show I’ve seen so far this year. This was a dream show for me being set in the Tudor era, a fantasy and an enemies to lovers arranged marriage. On top of all that, it’s hilarious! It’s very The Princess Bride with a dash more feminism. And it’s a book!

It is a historical fantasy inspired by the real Queen Jane Grey who only ruled for 9 days before she was beheaded. This story is a sort of ‘what if she had more than 9 days?’

It’s set in a fantastical world where there is a divide between people who can shape shift into animals (referred to as Ethians) and “pure people” who can’t shape shift (referred to as Verities). Jane is a plucky independent young woman who is basically a wellness guru with her knowledge of herbs for medicinal purposes and wants to make that her career. Unfortunately she is forced into marriage to a man she has never met by her mother in order to secure the family financially. Shortly after becoming married, Jane learns her husband is an Ethian and she also becomes Queen of England when King Edward is seemingly dead. The chemistry between the romantic leads is fantastic and the hijinks and murder attempts from others who want the crown for themselves make this show a lot of fun.
