Love in the Afternoon

Step aside persuasion, THIS is the most charming letter writing regency storyline I’ve read. AND there’s a puppy?! I have no notes.

This was charming, light hearted and adorable.

Captain Phelan is at war and out of both attract and loneliness, he wrote a letter to Prudence Mercer. However, Prudence had no interest in letter writing or an emotional connection with Captain Phelan, but did want his inheritance and finding him attractive was an added bonus. So, her friend Beatrix wrote him back. But she didn’t expect to feel connected to the Captain nor catch feelings herself. It’s so swoon-y!

Once Captain Phelan, Christopher, returns home- he’s not himself! He’s highly traumatized and struggles with anxiety and depression. Beatrix is living her best life with all of her animals and pets. Christopher scoffs at Beatrix at first- a woman in PANTS?! The scandal!

But slowly he thaws and they fall for each other in real life even outside of the letters. I LOVE that Albert is his emotional support dog and that Beatrix forms a real friendship with him. This is such a lovely story with a lot of heart that definitely reminded me of Bridgerton.
