A Court This Cruel and Lovely

This is the first fantasy I was truly able to love since finishing Throne of Glass. Not only did I love the story, it’s also a complete series so I don’t have to wait in cliffhanger purgatory!

The first 90% of this book is a lovely good time but that cliff hanger ending is CRUEL! So cruel that I’m immediately starting book 2 and will recommend it to everyone I know. If you are a SJM, Fourth Wing or Bridge Kingdom fan, do yourself a favor and read this ASAP.

It’s hard to describe the plot without spoiling but basically it’s a magical world where magic is highly regulated. Newborns’ magical powers are taken, but if the gods reject your power then you are considered corrupt. Which is life threatening. Our FMC is one of the corrupt and when she uses her magic to save a friend’s life, her secret is out that she is a corrupt and she goes on the run. There are heists, banter, found family and vigilantes.

Prisca, the FMC, is sassy but compassionate and always ends up doing the right thing even though she has flaws. The MMC is grumpy and morally gray and we love that.

This is one of those stories where you are slowly learning more and are kept guessing about who is who they say they are and if things are as they seem. We learn some by the end of book 1, but I know it’s gotta be tip of the iceberg. I can’t wait to read book 2.
